Chris Moyles has just quit from BBC’s biggest radio station, ending the station’s most unpleasant run in all its 45 years of existence. BBC Radio 1 has faced scrutiny for paying Chris Moyles to be a professional bully on radio.

The radio DJ has been firing crude, bullying remarks that border on sexism and gay-baiting, intertwined with a whole lot of bragging, for 15 years.

His radio show, which broadcast over breakfast, does not start the day on a positive note. Chris also has an uncanny ability to pick on any soft target, such as women who he called ‘dirty whores’ after he claimed that many women urinated in the shower.

The comment was followed by a threatening action from media regulator Ofcom, and this prompted BBC to warn Moyles and scare him with a fine. Moyles got away with his signature “it was all a joke” statement. 

This, however, had not been the last of his exploits. In a separate broadcast, he announced that Polish women were excellent at prostitution. In another, he fondled and described, on air, the breasts of former Spice Girl Mel B. In yet another, he asked women callers to reveal their bra sizes on air. He also suffered the wrath of Oscar winner Halle Berry, who accused him of racism after he impersonated someone he called ‘a big fat black guy’. He had also given personal comments about several other personalities such as Jodie Marsh and Faria Alam of Celebrity Big Brother.

Fifteen years ago, Moyles claimed that he was “the savior of Radio 1” and now that seems to be true, although he certainly didn’t imagine that he would do the saving simply by quitting.
