Entertainment’s best and worst comebacks
Sharon Stone – ‘Basic Instinct 2’ (2007) – MISS
The original ‘Basic Instinct’ (1992) had made Sharon Stone’s career. Its mixture of neo-noir style, a glossy murder plot and lashings of sex, violence and infamous leg-crossing made it a box office sensation. When Stone’s career began to hit a slump, she decided to revive her iconic character.
Stone starred as the sexually charged, murderous Catherine Tramell – one of cinema’s ultimate femme fatales. Like the new ‘Indiana Jones’, the leading star looked fantastic in the teasers but the film itself struggled to live up to its predecessor.
Without Michael Douglas sharing the lead role and a slightly dicey psychology plot instead of a murder mystery, this sequel bombed at the box office. At the 27th Golden Raspberry Awards, the film (dubbed by the ceremony as ‘Basically, It Stinks, Too’) won four Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Actress, Worst Prequel or Sequel and Worst Screenplay. It wasn't that bad.
