Mishaps that left masterworks in tatters
The Actor - Pablo Picasso
Brush with fate:
Torn down the side
After a visitor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York lost her balance and stumbled into the painting, Picasso's masterpiece was left with an "irregular vertical tear" in the lower right-hand corner of the canvas.
The six-inch gash was fortunately not on a focal point of the piece, which was painted in the winter of 1904 to 1905 and is said to mark the artist's transition from the Blue period to the Rose period. Experts will repair the six foot by foot foot work of art before it goes back on display.
