Kevin Smith's hilarious debut was predominantly filmed in the same convenience store that he worked in. Shot in black and white and choppily edited due to budgetary constraints, the majority of the budget went on soundtrack rights to artists such as Alice in Chains. To fund the film, Smith sold off his extensive comic book collection and maxed out nearly a dozen credit cards each with a $2,000 limit.
