Shoestring cinema: Groundbreaking budget greats
'Halloween' (1978)
Budget: $325,000
Gross: $60,000,000
John Carpenter shot one of the earliest examples of the masked killer/slasher genre, 'Halloween', over a period of 21 days in April of 1978. Half of the budget went on widescreen Panavision cameras. The iconic faceless mask was actually the cheapest the prop department could find: a Captain Kirk (William Shatner) mask which was then painted white.
