Sufferers of depression outside of the workplace are draining the taxes by a staggering £1.16 billion.
Tory work and pensions spokesman Chris Grayling said that the figures were "yet more evidence the Government has failed to get to grips with problems in our welfare state" and called for reforms to encourage those who are claiming benefits to get back to work.
