Before breaking up, guitar legends Van Halen had a string of worldwide hits including 'Jump', which was one of the 80s best-selling singles. Roth, the frontman, was renowned for his stage presence and hard-partying lifestyle, but his present line of work could not be further removed from his heyday. Now he is a fully qualified paramedic in New York.

He said: "I have been on more than 200 individual rides now. Not once has anyone recognised me, which is perfect. It has been an eye-opening adventure. I am a member of a team again - and that's what a rock band always was."
