Chewbacca’s furry head used in the original 'Star Wars' movies was auctioned off for £110,000. The iconic mask was worn by British actor Peter Mayhew, who towered at 7 feet 3 inches, in the trilogy. The memorabilia originally sold for £90,000 but the buyer’s premium added £20,000 to final price.
Chewbacca’s mane of long brown hair as well as his towering stature made him a famous part of the 'Star Wars' legacy. Also known a Chewie, he was the faithful companion of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, who saved his life.
Chewbacca’s headful of hair was not the only film memorabilia that was auctioned off at the Hollywood Vaults sale in Los Angeles.
The 1978 'Superman' costume worn by Christopher Reeve also raised £50,000, while the 'Edward Scissorhands' costume worn by Johnny Depp in 1990 was sold for £55,000.
The Willy Wonka suit worn by Gene Wilder in 1971 went for £47,000, while the original Golden Ticket used in the movie brought in £30,000.
The chest armour Russell Crowe donned for 'Gladiator' was also in the auction. It was sold for £37,000.
The Caped Crusader costume from Michael Keaton’s 'Batman Returns', in 1992, also fetched £20,000.
Chewie’s head, however, was the highest acquisition at the auction event.
