Deep-fried Mars bars have become quite popular, with the Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire claiming to be its originator nearly two decades ago.
The world-renowned chocolate manufacturing company that creates the original Mars bars, however, has distanced itself from the deep-fried version of their famous product, the Mars bar.
According to Mars, they do not authorise or endorse the product because it does not fit the company’s healthy living mantra.
They are seeking a menu disclaimer that will inform people that deep-frying is not the original plan Mars had for its product.
According to a spokesperson from Mars, the company is ‘really flattered that customers of Carron Fish Bar like (Mars bars) so much that it has now become a flagship product for the store’.
However, the spokesperson added, as quoted by the BBC: “No application for a protected geographical indication has been filed to date. Should an application be filed, unfortunately, we wouldn’t be able to support it as deep-frying one of our products would go against our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.”
Lorraine Watson of Carron Fish Bar, however, responded to a letter she received from Mars and told the chocolate manufacturer that she would happily put up a ‘disclaimer’ in the shop.
