Chris Moyles’ Radio 1 show beat by Radio 4’s Today ratings

Based on the latest Rajar figures, Radio 4’s Today programme has successfully beaten Chris Moyles’ Radio 1 show. Moyles’ morning radio programme, which ended last month, finished at 6.73million listeners; the show’s lowest number of listeners for the past six years.

Radio 4’s Today on the other hand, enjoyed an increased in listeners, reaching 6.94million followers. The show was able to attract 200,000 more listeners in just three months.

Radio 2’s Chris Evans also lost 400,000 listeners in the summer months but still managed to draw 8.55million, allowing him to still be the biggest breakfast DJ.

His station, which lost over 500,000 listeners, is still the biggest in the UK, with 13.9million followers.

BBC’s specialist news and sports station 5 Live on the other hand, did not benefit from London hosting the Olympics – as reported by The Independent – as they’ve seen a drop in their audience share. 

The opposite happened to Digital station Radio 6 Music, the Asian Network, and Radio 4, which recorded their best figures.

The BBC's director of audio and music, Tim Davie, told The Independent: "It's encouraging to see that the radio industry as a whole is in good health and impressive that it has held up over the Olympic summer.

"I'm thrilled that, despite there being so much competition for people's time and attention, three of our digital stations have hit record highs."
