War of the formats
High definition DVD v Blu-ray
The winner: Blu-ray
Toshiba abandoned HD DVD just one month after vowing to carry on the battle of the next generation video formats. The news left Blu-ray as the clear winner, ensuring the platform's continuation and inevitable success.
Contributing factors in the failure of HD DVD include Warner Brothers announcement that they would no longer produce HD releases plus Walmart and Netflix discounting their HD stock. Toshiba's withdrawal was no doubt the final nail in the coffin.
