War of the formats
Sky v BSB
The winner: Sky
In 1982 Rupert Murdoch acquired 80% of Satellite Television UK, one of the earliest satellite television channels for just 1 plus debts. He re-launched the channel in February 1989 as Sky Television.
Competition was soon on the scene in the form of BSB. With more ambitious planning, the intention of launching two of their own satellites and backing from the British Government BSB looked to be in a good position.
In 1990 as both companies were struggling. Sky bought out BSB in what many consider a hostile takeover and the battle was won before it truly began.
