Boxing rivals David Haye and Derek Chisora have finally declared a ceasefire after settling their differences at an Upton Park fight. It took five breathless rounds before the score was finally settled.
Haye ended the match in the fifth round using a decisive left hook that sent Chisora to the canvas. This is the first time this has happened to Chisora in his entire career.
The reunion provided a happy conclusion to the major brawl that the rivals found themselves in five months ago back in Munich.
Haye commented, “Any damage that was done by our altercation in Munich is well and truly fixed now.”
Fans are clearly happy, and Haye knows it, “The crowd have gone home happy with a smile on their face. That’s the bottom line.”
He also added, “Whatever beef I had with Dereck before, the fight is over now from my side and I hope it’s vice versa.”
His opinion of his opponent has also changed, he said. “I have a newfound respect for the man.”
Although Chisora had gone home defeated, Haye said that he “never believed he could be as good as he was tonight.”
“He raised his game,” Haye said of Chisora, who had to be rescued by the referee after he was knocked down twice. The scorecards read 39-37, 39-37, and 40-36, all in favor of Haye.
Chisora, however, seconded that his dispute with Haye was indeed over. “After the fight, we made up.”
He also announced that he would honor the bet they had made previously and would thus donate £20,000 to the Afro-Caribbean Leukaemia Trust, the charity of his choice.
