Arresting reads by great crime writers
James Ellroy
Recommended: 'LA Confidential' (1990)
James Ellroy's prose flies at his readers faster than a speeding bullet. Some paragraphs are just one word long (for example "Shots."), perfectly setting up a staccato style that dictates when a heart will pound and when a pulse will stop dead in its tracks. Everyone knows the film adaptation, but the novel only further fleshes out the complex world of the seedy side of the city of (fallen) angels.
