Hammett is nothing short of the master of hard-boiled detective fiction. Before Raymond Chandler, he was the one with all the snappy, dark one-liners, cheating broads, wiseguy hoods and shocking plot twists revolving around casual violence. It's pulp fiction to the extreme, and a style that every 'cool' writer has tried to emulate ever since.
