10 of the most inspiring films ever made
City Lights (1931)
Charlie Chaplin made many inspirational (and hilarious) films in his hugely influential career, but few have balanced comedy and drama as well as 'City Lights'. Reprising his famous silent Tramp character, Chaplin proved that the cinema world wasn't quite ready to fully switch over to 'talkies' just yet.
Perfectly highlighting tricky issues such as poverty, class and disability, the penniless Tramp falls for a blind flower-seller in the street with hilariously touching results. She believes he's a millionaire and he keeps up the charade, working odd jobs to pay for her needs, somehow hoping for enough money to pay for an operation to restore her sight.
