Essential rock'n'roll reads
‘The Dirt - Motley Crue’ by Neil Strauss, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars and Nikki Sixx
Subtitled ‘Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band’, many who don’t know their antics would refuse to call the rock balladeers “the world’s most notorious rock band” but after reading this, there’s no contest.
Even for those who don’t enjoy their dicey take on glam rock, this book of debauchery is an absolute must. It chronicles the band’s onstage and offstage antics, shot through with heavy helpings of sex and drugs. Names are named and overdoses are recalled, all in delirious clarity.
But this isn’t just a one-trick pony. Instead of being all sex, drugs and rock and roll, ‘The Dirt’ has a surprisingly human angle as the band struggle with their own notoriety and would do anything to just become regular joes. In the end, it’s more of a “what not to do” cautionary tale.
