Pop star and footballer divorce

Singer Jamelia and footballer Darren Byfield are set to divorce after 17 months of marriage.

A statement on behalf of the celebrity couple maintained that no-one else was involved in the split, and that their children were the top priority.

The R&B singer and the Walsall player have broken up before, briefly in 2007. Byfield later proposed at a surprise birthday party the singer threw for him.

They have a four-year-old daughter, Tiani, together. Jamelia has another daughter, Teja, aged eight, from a previous relationship.

A spokesman stated: "It is with regret that Jamelia and Darren Byfield today confirm they are splitting up and getting a divorce.

"No-one else is involved. Their priority is naturally their two children."

The couple married in West Sussex in June 2008. A friend said the pair had vowed to remain on civil terms.

Jamelia is currently working on a new album, which is expected to be released in the coming year.
