The Hurt Locker triumphs at the Oscars

War drama 'The Hurt Locker' triumphed at the Oscars this year, winning big over James Cameron's hotly tipped sci-fi spectacle 'Avatar'.
Kathryn Bigelow's film walked away with Best Picture and Director at the 82nd Academy Awards, making Bigelow the first woman to win a directing Oscar and only the fifth female nominated in Oscar history.
Her film was up against her ex-husband's 'Avatar' - the most popular film in cinema history. Both films were nominated for nine awards, with 'The Hurt Locker' ultimately leaving with six while three went to 'Avatar'.
"There's no other way to describe it - it's the moment of a lifetime," Bigelow said. “I dedicate this award to the men and women all over the world who wear a uniform: They are there for us, and we're there for them."
The rest of the night was somewhat predictable in terms of winners, with Jeff Bridges picking up Best Actor for 'Crazy Heart' after four previous nominations and Christoph Waltz scoring Best Supporting Actor for his heavily lauded role in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'.

Sandra Bullock continued her winning streak by scooping Best Actress for 'The Blind Side', while relative newcomer Mo'Nique was named Best Supporting Actress.
