One thing which became more dominant about Michael following 'Thriller' was his ever changing appearance. Not only did his skin colour become lighter, Michael's facial features dramatically changed with some plastic surgeons speculating that he had multiple nasal surgeries, a forehead lift, thinned lips and a cheekbone surgery.

It was also around this time that Michael experienced much tabloid press who dubbed him "Wacko Jacko" following a series of stories such as that he let his pet chimpanzee Bubbles share his toilet or that he bleached his skin. However Michael argued that these stories were untrue. It was later revealed that his skin colour changed after he was diagnosed with vitiligo and lupus.
