The Times' 20 best modern novels
20. 'Dr Zhivago' by Boris Pasternak
The Times newspaper surveyed its readers to mark the 60th birthday of The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival in order to find our most beloved modern novels. Other than needing to have been between 1949 and 2009, the only criteria was that it had to be published in English.
Released in 1957 and at over 500 pages, 'Dr Zhivago' is a hefty read at the best of times, telling the tale of a doctor's undoing thanks to his mixed emotions over women and the Russian Revolution. Epic in every scale, it was triumphantly put on film by David Lean in 1965.
But which other literary classics made the list?
