6. The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie
While 'Midnight's Children' may the trendy Rushdie title to own, 'The Satanic Verses', published seven years later in 1988 isn't the breeziest of reads. Dealing with Indian immigration in a dreamlike style, this caused public outrage, riots and even resulted in the deaths of those involved. Perhaps it is better to collect dust on the shelf.
