The reason why not many people finish this could be because it's actually six different stories in one, with each tale being told or read by the main character in the next, spanning the 19th century to the far future of a near apocalypse. If you can't finish the first story, the chances of making it to the end of the sixth are slim indeed. Richard and Judy, however, awarded it their Book of the Year - perhaps they took turns reading it.
