Floods: Brits endure a month’s rain in 24 hours

Britain suffered an estimated one month’s worth of rainfall in just 24 hours in some areas on Monday, with more rain set to follow. The Met Office are warning there could be up to four inches of rainfall by the end of Tuesday.

Britons are bracing themselves against the wild weather with a wet start to the week, and so far around 160 flood warnings have been issued by authorities.

There are also concerns over strong winds, with Northern Ireland and Scotland expected to be hit the worst, and wind speeds are thought to reach up to 70mph on coastal areas.

With widespread disruption being caused by the bad weather, there have been reports of travel delays in some parts of the country including some train services being affected. The East Coast Mainline trains were cancelled between Newcastle and Edinburgh due to the rain, as reported by the BBC.

Tragically several deaths have occurred, with one woman dying as a result of a branch hitting her while she was at the Royal Botanical Gardens in London.

The recent weather has also claimed several lives due to car crashes The Telegraph has reported, including a one-year-old child and two men in Cambridgeshire, as well as a mother and son elsewhere.

The Environment Agency has urged people to avoid flooded areas where possible and to check weather advisories.

It is understood that 2012 has seen the UK’s wettest summer for the last century.
