The evolution of the first person shooter
'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2' (Infinity Ward and Activision / PS3, XBox360)
By this point, the FPS genre has evolved so far that its release is akin to a rock star's entrance to a stage or a movie premiere. Indeed, this hotly tipped sequel became the first game to be given a star-studded West End red carpet event.
Industry experts stated that the release was the ultimate entertainment event of 2009, trumping statistics for Hollywood films and top albums. It was not met without controversy - politicians jumped in expressing their concern about the title which allows players to partake in jarringly accurate suicide bombings which kill civilians.
The game uses Infinity Ward's in-house IW 4.0 game engine, which is claimed to be a generation beyond the capabilities of the engine used in the explosive 'Call of Duty 4'.
In addition to larger photorealistic worlds and outstanding graphic detail 'Modern Warfare 2' uses "dynamic AI" which ensures that enemies act differently for each level played, meaning that the players have to be dynamic themselves to survive.
