Gary McKinnon, a Scottish systems administrator was accused of hacking the biggest military computer in 2002. On October 16, 2012, after series of legal proceedings, his extradition order was withdrawn by Home Secretary Theresa May. Nobody could be happier than his mother, Janis Sharp.
Janis fought the extradition order against her only son as hard as she could for more than ten years. Yesterday, she sat in front of dozen of TV cameras praising British justice.
‘We’ve done it,’ the 63-year-old announced triumphantly. ‘We’ve won for Gary, and we’ve won for the little person against the Establishment, and that is an incredible achievement.’
Janis thanked Home Secretary Theresa May and Paul Dacre of the Daily Mail for helping her son.
On the other hand, US is understandably disappointed with the decision. In a statement, Rebekah Carmichael, A US Department Justice spokesman said: “The United States is disappointed by the UK Home Secretary’s decision not to extradite Gary McKinnon, particularly given the past decisions of the UK courts and prior Home Secretaries that he should face trial in the United States.”
