De Niro played the younger version and Al Pacino succeeded him as head of the family after he got whacked but it's Marlon Brando who brought gangster back in the 70s with his Oscar winning portrayal of Don Corleone in 1972.
He famously refused his Academy Award but made the film world an offer they couldn't refuse or forget.
