Spyware
Spyware
Spyware is software that hides itself somewhere on your computer collecting information about you and what you do on the internet.
It can invade your privacy by passing on your personal details without your knowledge.
Basic spyware:
Spyware is often downloaded onto your PC when you download other free software. When you see a license agreement for any software you download from the internet read it carefully.
Often buried in the licence agreement will be a disclaimer saying that information about you and your browsing habits will be sent to the company's website.
Adware and malware:
Adware is a form of spyware that installs secret advertising software on your computer, often generating annoying on-screen adverts.
The worst forms of adware hijack links in webpages. So, instead of taking you to the correct website they take you to another site against your will.
Malware is another form of spyware. It's short for malicious software and is often designed to cause damage to your computer system.
Other forms of malware can allow hackers access to your passwords or to monitor the keys you press on the keyboard.
In addition to all this, adware and malware applications can use up system resources, causing your PC to crash or freeze.
How you get it:
A common way of spyware getting onto your PC is by downloading free or illegal programs from the net. Adult websites are also a big source of spyware.
Also, beware of unusual grey dialog boxes that appear when you are browsing the internet. Don't click on the install/Ok button - just close it.
Staying clear of it:
Obviously, avoiding adult sites and illegal software will keep you away from the worst sources of spyware. In addition:
- Install anti-virus software
- Keep your anti-virus software up to date
- Install a personal firewall
- Use Windows updates to patch security holes
- Do not open email messages that look suspicious
- Do not click on email attachments you were not expecting
Removing it:
Thankfully, there is free software that can check your system for spyware and remove if necessary. We recommend:
Obviously these programs are not supplied by Supanet and we take no responsibility for the download or use of them.
