History's 10 greatest football managers
Bill Shankly
Bill Shankly was one of Britain's most successful and respected football players and managers. He played nearly 300 times in league for Preston North End and played for Scotland seven times.
He is most remembered for his achievements as a manager, credited particularly for establishing Liverpool as one of the major forces in the English game - even their famous red kit is due to Shankly.
While managing them, Liverpool won the first division championship in 1964, followed by a FA Cup win and another championship in 1965. He made a surprise retirement after the 1974 FA Cup Final and passed away September 29 1981.
Quote: "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death; I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."
