'West Side Story' (1961)
Loosely adapted from William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ but transferred to a New York cityscape populated by rival gangs, ‘West Side Story’ won more Oscars (10) than any other musical.
The music came from the maestro himself, Leonard Bernstein with lyrics from ‘Sweeney Todd’ legend Stephen Sondheim.
