How to deal with hairy situations

shaveLet the growth go unchecked and you will have to cancel dates, avoid the swimming pool and wear thick tights in the hottest of temperatures.

But with so many hair-removal treatments available, there is simply no excuse. Here we look at the best ways to keep those prickles, in-growing hairs and unsightly shadows at bay.

Shaving
This is not a great option though it is OK for legs and underarms if you are in a hurry.

But reaching for the razor is a definite no-no for facial hair. As it only takes off the top of the hair, regrowth is very quick and hair becomes thicker and coarser, creating stubble and ingrown hairs.

Bleaching
This is sometimes a forgotten option, yet is very effective, especially for the face. It is easy to do at home and is quick and painless.

Try Jolen Creme Bleach, which comes in two types, one for extra-sensitive skin. It costs 4.40 from Boots, Superdrug and chemists nationwide.

Hair removal cream: Nair's new Peach cream hair remover smells gorgeous and leaves legs soft. Leave on for five minutes then rinse off. Available nationwide at 4.49.

Waxing
You can do this at home or have it done in a salon. Both are good options. Waxing pulls the hair from the root so regrowth is much slower, but it can be a little painful.

Veet hair removal strips are one option, priced 5.99. Apply to the skin and pull in the opposite direction of the hair growth.

Veet's hot wax roll-on, which you heat in a microwave, is good too and is 7.99. Both products are available in Boots and Superdrug.

Laser hair removal
A great option but more expensive and you may need more than one session to sort out the problem.

This is a more permanent solution because it destroys the part of the follicle that produces the hair. But be careful. Some lasers are not compatible with dark skins and could cause discolouration. IPL (intense pulsed light) is a gentle option.

See Harleystreetskin.co.uk or call 020 7935 0986. Three to eight sessions are needed and each costs 60.

Or try Sciton laser which is a stronger alternative. See freedomhealth.co.uk or call them on 020 7637 1600. The number of 60 sessions needed depends on the individual.
