Despite almost a decade of research and millions of pounds of funding, scientists at Loughborough University’s Department of Nuptial Studies have admitted that they have yet to find an answer to a question that has vexed attached men for centuries: "Do you think she looks pretty?"

While diversionary tactics result in a frosty silence at best, the supposedly comical remark "She's not as good looking as your sister" went down in a lead balloon amongst the couples volunteering in the study.

The point is there is no good answer to this question, but women can't seem to avoid asking their partner. But while a little white lie could be harmless, repeated lies and deception can break up a once-happy relationship.
