Can you tell me about subsidence caused by trees

Can you tell me about subsidence caused by trees and what to check for to determine whether there is a problem?

Unless the roots have rotted down after the death of a tree causing visible subsidence, lifting is far more of a problem. This is caused by roots rising up to the surface. This will cause cracks in walls and lifting of paving stones etc and is quite obvious to the naked eye. To avoid lifting you have to be sure to plant trees and shrubs at an appropriate distance from walls. The rule of thumb is that the root spread will be roughly equivalent to the top spread. Hope this helps.
