How can I preserve berries, once picked
Sometimes my husband arrives home with some strawberries and raspberries that he has collected from our allotment. If we are not needing them that day, how best do I store them until we do, should they be washed or not, kept in the fridge or not etc.
Lucky you! There is nothing nicer than homegrown berries. The important thing with both kinds is to ensure they are dry, Raspberries freeze very well. Just spread them out one layer deep on a tray. When they are frozen you can bag them to save space. Strawberries really dont freeze very well and I think it is a waste of a lovely fruit to try. Keep them on a tray not touching in a cool dry place, They should last a few days. Try to train your husband to pick them at the point of ripeness. If you have a really large crop and want to freeze, roll each berry in sugar before placing on the tray - this should preserve the shape a bit though they wont taste quite like the fresh berry.Search the web
