My lawn is very 'bouncy'

My lawn is very 'bouncy'. I am assuming that it is because of the amount of thatch in it.

I have tried raking it out but after hours trying it does not seem to be a lot better. Also the areas where I have raked the most have gone very barren looking. I have heard that you can hire some kind of machine to do this removal. Would I be best sowing some grass seed on the barren areas if so would I have to remove the 'dead' grass, apply some soil and sow some seed. Any help would be most appreciated as I am a bit of a novice gardener.

Regular raking really is the only way to deal with it - and very hard work it is too! After raking, spike the ground either with a proper spiker or a garden fork - this is also very hard work! Then take one handful of seed to five handfuls of sand and scatter it across the lawn. Do not do this during a drought. Once the seed starts growing, treat your lawn to some lawn sand (actually fertiliser) and keep it watered. You should end up with some nice grass but you will have to accept the fact that a lawn is really labour intensive. Which is why I leave it to my significant other!
