When is the best time to prune apple trees?

When is the best time to prune apple trees? I have had two for two years now, and they have not fruited very much I feel that if they were pruned correctly they will flourish.

I have also ordered apple pear and plum duo trees will these have to have special treatment?

Prune the apple tree in January when there is no frost. Cut back to 2-3 buds to allow for spur development from which flowers and fruit will grow if you have remembered to allow for cross pollination. Duos are usually grafted onto dwarf stock so they should need little or no pruning. Treat the apple/pear as for apple but the plum must never be pruned while in a dormant state as this allows entry to silver leaf disease. Prune only when it is in growth.
