Genuine ghost towns
4. Craco (Italy)
This medieval town is typical of the area – built on long, vertical hills as a vantage point with farmland integrated in and around its infrastructure. It's thought that the spectacular town dates back to 1060.
But during the 20th century poor farming conditions, landslides, earthquakes and various wars plagued the land forcing the population out. By the 60s the remaining 1,800 were transported to nearby valley leaving the crumbling town still standing (and steeped in history) to this day.
