This is the largest maximum security prison in the UK and western Europe. Furthermore Wakefield is the first Supermax security jail in Britain. And rightly so – it held Harold Shipman (who committed suicide there), Roy Whiting, Ian Huntley and currently has the infamous Charles Bronson (above) locked down.

Dubbed "the most violent prisoner in Britain", Bronson was arrested for armed robbery (managing just £26) in 1974 but his initial seven year sentence has been consistently extended due to acts of violence, damage and numerous hostage scenarios.
