Many artists have made a controversy when it comes to depictions of religion but Serrano took it a step further when he presented his photograph of a crucifix submerged in a glass of his urine.

Further controversy came when Serrano was granted $15,000 from the taxpayer-funded National Endowment for the Arts. Many believed that this violated the unity between the church and the state.
