While this is one of the most beloved novels of recent times, filled with beautiful exposition and a vivacious style, it remains a hard book to swallow. Even if you do, underlying tragedies and a cheerless ending will probably wish you hadn't. But if that's not enough to put you off, Nicolas Cage's performance in the film adaptation manages to hit all the wrong notes.
