The story of Whitacre's fight to reveal the truth has been captured on the screen by 'Bourne' actor Matt Damon in black comedy 'The Informant!'.
Mark Whitacre was a senior executive in the BioProducts division at Fortune 500 corporation Archer Daniels Midland. His name first entered the public's conscious when, in 1995, it was revealed he had been working as an FBI mole to expose a vast international price-fixing operation at AMD.
Whitacre worked undercover with the bureau for three years, but a few years into the investigation, he revealed to one of his FBI handlers that A few years into the price-fixing investigation, Whitacre confessed to his FBI handlers that he had been involved with corporate kickbacks and money laundering at the company while working as a whistleblower
The companies involved were fined and various executives were sentenced to jail, but because of the $9m he had embezzled Whitacre lost his immunity and served almost nine years in prison.
