Mariah Carey scooped just one prize at the American Music Awards last night (22.11.05) - despite being up for four gongs.
The pop diva won the night's first award for Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist, but lost the Favourite Female Pop/Rock category to Gwen Stefani.
Carey - who left the awards ceremony empty-handed in 1997 after being nominated in six categories - told the audience at the Los Angeles bash: "Thank you so much for the warmth and the love."
Despite the early win, the 35-year-old singer's comeback album, 'The Emancipation of Mimi', was then beaten in the Pop/Rock and Soul/R&B categories by Green Day's 'American Idiot' and Destiny's Child's 'Destiny Fulfilled'.
Elsewhere Green Day, country star Tim McGraw, 'American Idol' winner Kelly Clarkson, the Black Eyed Peas and Destiny's Child all collected two of the prestigious awards.
Rap star Missy Elliott won Favourite Female Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and dedicated her award to late singer and friend Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in 2001.
She said: "I got to thank God because that's my inspiration for everything that I do."
Performances came from Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Keith Urban and the Rolling Stones, who sang via a satellite link-up from Utah.
