10 great sci-fi films that aren’t ‘Star Wars’
‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ (1976)
Starring the alien-looking rock legend David Bowie in his first leading role, the visually surreal ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ offers a tantalising concept – what happens if an alien visits Earth looking for water for his planet to save his family but then becomes engulfed in our culture’s flaws and greed?
Bowie is Thomas Jerome Newton, the humanoid alien who falls to Earth with an advanced mind. He uses his knowledge of future technology to patent many groundbreaking inventions (such as self-developing photography film) in order to raise money to build a space transport program to take the water back home. But money, alcohol, sex and television hold him here like a vice.
