10 of the greatest ever screen car chases
Bullitt (1968)
Actors don't get much cooler than Steve McQueen, and same goes for his car - a green, 1968 Ford Mustang 390 CID Fastback. McQueen plays the cop going after the two suspicious men in a black Dodge Charger. The sound design and editing is phenomenally realistic as the two muscle cars roar through the steep, unforgiving hills of San Francisco while the classy jazz music segues into cold, hard realism.
A real life racing enthusiast, McQueen performed a lot of the driving himself. One of his near-crashes wasn't in the script but director Peter Yates kept it in for realism. It may seem dated now as 'Bullitt' lacks the fast cutting editing of its latter day imitators, but it's held its rightful place as one of cinema's best chases due to its cool style and attention to detail.
