The tragic death of Heath Ledger nearly overshadowed the release, but praise of his performance - and director Christopher Nolan's ability to once again take Batman to a whole new level - has catapulted this film from merely a sequel into a top contender for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations.
