Essential rock'n'roll reads
‘Grunge’ by Michael Lavine (photographs) and Thurston Moore (words)
Few genres of music exploded quite as spectacularly as grunge did. In a short timeframe there was Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Mad Season, Screaming Trees and plenty more taking alt-rock to its extremes. Shortly after their explosion, many of the figureheads were dead.
Michael Lavine’s stunning black and white images chronicle the musical style that takes no prisoners, highlighting the immense contributions to fashion (baggy shirts, flannel shirts and long hair were all the rage) as well as the heavily beaten guitars and screaming vocalists.
Adding his own influential and experienced take on the proceedings is Sonic Youth’s frontman and guitarist Thurston Moore, who provides (all too brief) nuggets of first hand wisdom. While you won’t learn much from this book, it’s a perfect set of seldom seen images to flip through at home.
