Final cut: Unforgettable screen swansongs
Henry Fonda – ‘On Golden Pond’ (1982)
The legendary actor who brought ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ so memorably into fruition continued acting steadily in supporting roles through the 60s and 70s, but his final leading role thrust him back into the limelight, cementing his reputation as one of the best.
In an achingly moving performance as an old man struggling to cope with feelings of mortality, he picked up the Best Actor Oscar. The film also starred his daughter, Jane – the two had notoriously fallen out in real life, but their collaboration in the screen giant’s final triumph makes it even more emotional.
