Final cut: Unforgettable screen swansongs
Paul Newman – ‘Road to Perdition’ (2002)
Technically not his last screen role (he was a revelation in the TV miniseries ‘Empire Falls’ and he provided his vocal talents to the animated film ‘Cars), but his swansong in ‘Road to Perdition’ proved that veteran Oscar winner and philanthropist could still cut it with his contemporaries.
He played an ageing mob boss who senses that his time must be up and feels torn between business and the emotional connection he has made to his surrogate son (played by Tom Hanks) who threatens his empire. It’s an understated performance throughout, but his final scene is devastating.
