Lombard was one of the most successful film actresses and the highest paid leading lady of the late 1930s - earning half a million dollars for her cherished comedic performances each year, which at the time was nearly unheard of.  Further boosting her appeal, she was married to man of the moment Clark Gable.

Proving that she was certainly worth her keep, her final film hilariously depicted her as an actress in a troupe of entertainers who use their stage skills and props to deceive the Nazis in occupied Warsaw. Having filmed all of her scenes, she travelled to her home state of Indiana for a war bond rally, but the plane she was travelling on crashed, killing all on board.
