Final cut: Unforgettable screen swansongs
Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe – ‘The Misfits’ (1961)
Rarely do two iconic actors share the same final film, but even more miraculous is that it’s such a great film to go out on. Gable and Monroe star alongside fellow tragic acting titan Montgomery Clift in this searing emotional drama of crushed dreams in the modern American west.
Gable, despite battling ill health throughout the production, insisted on doing his own stunts for his fierce performance which included being towed along the ground by a speeding truck. Monroe, meanwhile, proved she was a considerable acting talent and not just a screen beauty. She died of a drug overdose while shooting another movie, which was subsequently recast.
